From the moment you step off the long tail boat onto the island of Phi Phi your greeted with traditional tattoo parlours shamelessly displaying their array of designs and creative abilities. Bamboo tattoos are the traditional form of tattooing in Thailand. This Asian technique dates back around 3000 years and the process involves taping a needle to a bamboo rod and repeatedly tapping the needle into the skin to leave an ink mark. This tradition started with Buddists, monks would have tattoos symbolising their faith, however now, it’s more an expressive art.

Take an hours flight south of Bangkok city and you reach the magnificent islands of Southern Thailand. Famed for their idyllic landscapes travelers flock to experience the tranquility for themselves. This month I visited Koh Phangan island and stayed with the fabulous Phangan Bayshore Resort, located on Haan Rin Beach this resort has perfect access for the Full Moon Party if that’s your bag or simply has some if the countries best beaches right on your doorstep.
Bayshore Resort offers a number of different room styles to suit a multitude of tastes. If you’re looking to be in the mist of the action then the hotel building offers poolside suites complete with magnificent views of the beach and waters, a truly magical view. If you’re looking for something a little more intimate then be sure to check out their exclusive Villa’s. The villa’s are slick and contemporary offering tranquil views, perfect for couples looking for a quieter experience.
Step out on the streets of Phuket and you instantly feel like you’ve entered another realm. Patong Bay comes is alive with the eccentric and the wonderful, it provided me with a bizarre experience which was partially down to Lady Boy culture.
Strolling down Patong Bay you are exposed to bars laced with Lady Boys and prostitution (one openly stating – Ladies upstairs, Lady Boys downstairs), this seedy vibe is undoubtedly reinforced by the hotels and merchandise, our mini bar came including a pack of Durex, not quite what I expected!
Bangkok Airways, the cheap, easy way to fly around Asia. As always with these budget airlines, I’m sceptical when it comes to the facilities, and service they provide. For only £29 for a flight how can they possibly provide good service when compared to the western companies who, let’s be honest, fail in this department.
To my great surprise, and I do really mean great, Bangkok Airways provide one of the highest, if not these highest, ranking short hall services in the world. Continue reading
Bangkok, renowned for the notorious Tuk Tuk. These days more and more tourists flock to the beautiful capital of Thailand to dive into the culture, experience the cuisine of the East and shop among some of the cheapest markets.
When attempting to get around this city of hustle and bustle a Tuk Tuk can be quite the appealing. Drivers will lure you in with their knowledge and promises to take you to see the true heart of the capital, but be warned, Tuk Tuk’s are not always what they appear. Continue reading
You can’t begin to explain the sheer beauty of Thailand to those who have yet to experience it. The scenery is out of this world in many parts and leaves you breathless, longing for more.
My top tips for anyone wishing to visit the land of smiles would be to research exactly what you want from your trip, the diversity of the country allows travellers to experience a whole different realm of culture from island to city. For those wanting to explore I heavily suggest heading east with an open mind, be willing to embrace whatever the country has to throw at you. Continue reading
