UK; why the Isle of Arran is the idyllic wedding venue

Just an hour out of Glasgow is the small town of Ardrossen, home to the ferry connecting Scotland to the 60mile island, Arran.

Some might say Arran isn’t your typical holiday destination but for my family, it’s been the chosen destination for over 15years. This weekend was my very first trip to Arran for my stepsisters wedding so I thought it would be good to share my experience with you all.

With a population of only 4,300 people it’s easy to see how Arran has managed to maintain its tradition heritage in a globalised world. Arran feels excluded from modern culture of UK, it feels raw and traditional. I love it!

How often can you say a town is untouched by popular culture? The island has no retail franchises, no Macdonald’s nor a Topshop, infact the only brand you will find on there is Cooperative Food Stores. Signal isn’t great on the island so all that’s left to do is put down your technology and go explore the history of this beautiful island.

Here’s some pointers of things to do whilst in Arran.

1. Brodick Castle, Garden and Country Park is a great place to visit! Lose yourself in the Victorian Highland estate, a perfect day out with the family! Brodick Castle is located closely to Goatfell Mountain and is the perfect backdrop for some travel photos.

2. Fancy testing your trekking skills, pull on them walking boots and take a hike up Goatfell, Arran’s highest mountain. Goatfell stands 874meters high and has several routes up depending on your stamina and intensity level. It is rumoured that on a clear day Ireland can be seen from the top.

3. If golf is more your thing then why not make it your challenge to get around all the courses on the island, Arran is home to 12 courses. Or how about shipping the other half off for a game whilst you indulge in one of the spas on the Ireland. Bliss after a long days hike.

And finally, I know your dying to ask, the wedding went perfectly! If your planning your big day then Arran could be an option for you too. This beautiful island has the golden coastal scenes to the right and forestry mountain scenes to the left. It really is simply idyllic.

Roadtrip USA; what you won’t account for when planning

Posted on by 0 comment

I love America and have visited the continent on numerous occasions, but recently I undertook one large road trip across the states. As a UK citizen I found it difficult to gage the expenditure and budget for ‘cost of living’ against the activities I wanted to experience. I thought it useful to outline to travellers how much of the budget I actually blew on my road trip and the best ways to save when travelling the states.

In most countries, particularly Asia, it’s far cheaper to ‘wing it’ shall we say and book your accommodation as you arrive, this is not the case in America. Planning is everything when it comes to travelling America. Work out your route, and opt to spend more days in the cheaper areas, also consider weekends, it’s cheaper to stay out of the large conventional cities such as LA, San Francisco & New York on weekends.

Do your research, travelling by car appears expensive on the surface, but split it 4 ways and this makes getting about a less costly experience. Gas in the states costs nothing compared to Petrol in the UK so don’t just assume that a budget trip can’t include a car. A secondary advantage of having a car is you are able to sleep in it, or get to the more rural areas to camp, this will bring the cost of your trip down whilst being a fun alternative to another night in the Hotel.

Tips, I wrote an article on tips that you should check out before travelling. A minimum of 15% is compulsory and is not considered a generous tip, you should budget to leave 18-20% for all sit down meals, take this into account before you opt to eat in the establishment.

Wifi is available in mass across America, from bars and restaurants to historical establishments. Make sure you request the wifi password and Skype/Facetime home for free, far cheaper than purchasing an unnecessary and costly Sim Card.

The total budget for my trip was £2,000 (including flights from the UK), my total expenditure was around £2,400. It’s important you take into account all additional costs before you budget for the states! But always remember, you’ll make back your money when travelling Asia a less costly part of the world.

Festivities; a little touch of Christmas.

Christmas 2011, one to remember. We had our Christmas meal at the Wentbridge House Hotel, Pontefract this year. It was beautiful. To start I had a seafood risotto followed by a touch of tradition, a turkey dinner.

I ended my meal with a chocolate pudding come brownie. It was simply beautiful.
Boxing day was spent in Stockton on tees with Sam.

The boys played with their helicopter .. standard males at christmas perhaps?! haa

.. and they played with Norris the Nikon! haa

Hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas.. Until next year..

Photography; Danbo’s had a busy week

eee I’m sorry it’s been awhile since I’ve posted guys! Danbo’s proving to be quite a handful.. so much so that I’ve had my hands full this past month! .. Firstly IVE GRADUATED. Pictures to follow. Me and Danbo have, however, been making a little picture diary of what were been upto to share with you. He’s quite the little poser, you have been warned.

The 15th of November was a good day for me and Danbo, we went to London to buy shoes for my Graduation from York St John University. A long day trailing round the shops tired my little man out! However he did discover enough energy to have a play around in my new shoes! haaa!

Whoop! On Thursday the 17th of November I graduated! .. as much as it should of been a day about me little Danbo got jealous, I supplied him with his own cap and a party popper which soon cheered him up! how lovely he looked beaming with pride hahaa! Such an amazing day!

Me and Danbo fell out of the 18th, I warned him not to over do it with the alcohol but, as always, he didn’t listen! .. he ended up drunk on Vodka and Bucks Fizz.

Awww! Sam bought me some flowers to say well done! beautiful flowers they were too! Bright pinks and purples, Danbo decided to model with them, so i photographed 🙂

Danbo loves the new Marks and Spencer advert with the XFactor contestants in, he skips around singing ‘when you wish upon a star’, he’s also a great fan of making wishes upon 11:11. Sometimes he even drags me outside to see if we can see any shooting stars!

Ot-oooh .. all this partying has worn Danbo out! he’s not been feeling to well recently! So I made him drink some ikky medicine to see if he could fight off his cold! Fingers crossed for Danbo!

The cold has arrived! .. Danbo is bed bound! No more partying for this little boy!.. I’ve took his toys off him and told him he’s not aloud to move! Rest is on the cards!

Danbo’s been feeling a little better! So as a treat for being good me and Sam took him to the Cinema to see In Time. We made a drastic error! .. ‘In Time showing in Screen 5; .. We, however, sat ourselves in screen 4. Epic fail considering we had to sit through 2 and whatever hours of that dreadful film Twilight, Breaking Dawn Part 1. I think I speak for all three of us when I say ‘Never Again’ .. it has to be the worst film ever. Fact.

Danbo has quite a busy month coming up! .. Ice Skating in London with myself and Sam, Advent Calender opening and Christmas! I look forward to snapping all his cheeky moments! 😀

Today I went wandering with my camera around Ladybower, Derbyshire, it was a beautiful day so I was lucky enough to grab a few nice shots! hope you like!

Grass, with the focus in front of me on the first, the latter focusing on grass situatied around the middle.

A very cute Lamb posed for me for quite a while

All shots were set on different settings, the lamb and view were taken on auto (on a Nikon D3100) and the others all on A/P.
Let me know what you think!
